The Foodway Story
1948 - present
Little did Richard “Dick” Gerlach realize, as he opened his own business in Shreveport in 1948, that he’d be cementing a family history that would surpass 7 decades. Gerlach's first steps became purchasing prime cuts of fresh meat. He then processed them into portion sizes which were then sold to restaurants, hotels, drive-ins, and other institutions. As the family grew, so to did the business. Dick's son-in-law, Pete Miller began working at Gerlach in the 60's.
In 1970 Gerlach Meat Company was the first plant in Shreveport to be awarded the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Inspection Permit. This gave Gerlach a full-time USDA Inspector to assure the highest quality standards in meat products. It also gave its approval for Richard to expand the business to include cooked, prepared foods. It allowed the company to evolve beyond a handful of employees to 57 employees that included warehouse employees, truck drivers, meat cutters, meat handlers, and plant clerical staff.
In the 80's, with Dick wanting to retire, Pete bought the company and formed Foodway, Inc. Keeping the foundation of the company at meat processing, the family expanded their corporate footprint by offering canned and frozen goods as well as sugars, flours, spices and seasonings.
In the 90’s, the two grandsons stepped into their prospective roles working in the store and expanded the business again. The new arm of the company was The Louisiana Meat Store which opened the door for the public.
These days Richard Miller will smile as he tells you it’s a “further process”.
“It's not a slaughter house. We don't have hanging meat or anything...we get it already boxed up from the packing houses and then process it into portions for restaurants, schools, hospitals, churches, caterers, event planners, food trucks or whatever the situation is."
